_0000_photoOne of the most common questions we get asked by our guests due to arrive at our luxury self-catering properties in Edinburgh is what are the ‘must things we should do’? Of course the biggies are attending the Edinburgh Festival and experiencing/surviving Edinburgh at New Year. But, don’t despair, there are magical things to do all year round in this beautiful city. So here’s the Edinburgh Hideaways top ten (well actually 11 but that doesn’t sound so good) bucket list, in no particular order:

  • A tramp up Arthur’s Seat – walking over the hill to the traditional watering hole, The Sheep’s Heid in Duddingston Village. Arthur’s Seat was recently voted as one of the world’s best ‘city hikes’.
  • A visit to Edinburgh Castle (it’s got to be done)
  • Spy on the city from Edinburgh’s first purpose built visitor attraction, the Camera Obscura and the World of Illusions
  • A hike up (Sir Walter) Scott Monument in Princes Street Gardens – the world’s largest monument to a writer!
  • Get spooked e.g. a late night ghost walk (Mercat Tours) or a trip to the underground secret streets of Mary King’s Close. Or, for the very brave, a trip to Edinburgh Dungeons
  • A picnic in Holyrood Park combined with a visit to one of its attractions which includes Scottish Parliament, Palace of Holyroodhouse and Our Dynamic Earth
  • Get your bearings with an open top bus tour
  • Go posh – champagne afternoon tea at the Balmoral Hotel or Prestonfield House
  • Become a connoisseur at the Scotch Whisky Experience Centre – don’t leave without knowing whether you’re a peat lover or not!
  • Enjoy more iconic views from Calton Hill, part of UNESCO’s world heritage site
  • Take in some culture at any of the galleries e.g. combine a visit to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art with a riverside Walk – perhaps following the river to the Botanic Gardens.
